& Dana Leslie Goldstein |
Brother-Sister Team Bring Liberty to Life
About the Authors:
Dana Leslie Goldstein & Jonathan Goldstein
Up until 1997, Jonathan had a solo act performing in New York City
and Long Island as a singer-songwriter and comedian. Dana was an
award-winning playwright and poet. But in 1996 and 1997, when they
each became parents, their artistic goals began to shift. Art for
art's sake had become less important than making a difference.
Their first collaboration was Lady
of Copper, a musical about the Statue of Liberty that celebrates
the role of immigrants in American history. The show has been an
unqualified success, and a full-length version of the show, entitled
Liberty, is in development for
the Broadway stage.
But Dana and Jonathan are both parents of elementary school age
children, and they want to continue to bring quality educational
theater to the schools. Jon says, "I feel like bringing this show
to kids gives them a better way to view their world - to help them
see how important it is to work together, regardless of their heritage."
In addition to Lady of Copper,
the Goldsteins have collaborated on other projects including Theater
Garden's Enough For All,
and a short musical about war, peace, safety, love and the middle
east, entitled This Year in Jerusalem. They are currently
at work on a top-secret new musical for family audiences.
According to Dana, "Collaboration is the most natural thing in
the world for us. We have the same artistic vocabulary, because
we grew up together. We can also be completely honest with each
other - no mean feat in a collaboration - because we know that love
and respect are at the root of our work together." And you can tell
when you see their shows.
